The Willis Family History
The Willis family is a product of intermarriage between old Scottish clans: Gunn, Henderson, MacDonald and Stewart. The farthest back I can trace the Willis family as of 2 February 2011 is to the Gunn Clan of Scotland.
The name "Willis" is a derivative of William; Willis means "Son of William" and "William" must have been altered in the 1500s-1600's to "Willis." The name originated in Scotland in the lands owned by the Gunns.
The Gunn clan originated from the Norse peoples and lived in the Scottish lands of Caithness and Sutherland. Some of the Gunns are descendant from the Picts, a warring Scottish tribe who repelled the Roman Empire and forced Hadrian to construct a wall below the Highlands called 'Hadrian's Wall, which still partially stands.
